The main difference between H-beams and I-beams is their shape and load capacity. H-beams have wide, parallel flanges forming an "H" shape, offering a larger surface area with stronger bending and torsion resistance. They are ideal for heavy-duty structures like large-span factories, high-rise buildings, and bridges. I-beams have tapered flanges and an "I" shape, making them lighter but with lower load-bearing strength, better suited for residential and light commercial buildings.
In the U.S., H-beams commonly use materials like A36, A572, and A992, while Europe uses the UB/UC series. I-beams in the U.S. often use A36 and A992, with the IPE series being standard in Europe. H-beams provide better seismic performance and support for large spans but are more expensive; I-beams are more budget-friendly and ideal for small to medium projects.
